Tracking: Andrew Hatfield and Ralph "Prez" Perez

I’ve been working hard to get one of the singles done in time for the Christmas season. The track “I Saw The Light” is coming along nicely. Andrew will be laying down the Mandolin part tonight, and Prez will be coming in to lay down the bass immediately after him. I’m hoping to have it finished with enough time to promote it along with the benefit concert we’re playing in November.

On my last record I played the mandolin.. and I don’t play mandolin. Andrew is amazing. I’m looking forward to tracking him. He has a remarkable sense of harmonic structure and a real talent for drawing out creative melodies within a given context.

Also, on “This Living Room”(my last record www.itunes.com/mattlarson) we tracked the bass using a Bass POD. It worked nicely, but Prez is bringing his Ampeg rig and a new Fender P bass.. it should be delicious.

thanks for reading, live, m

Tracking: Working on the Next Record

I’m not sure about you, but if you’re an indie artist it is both fantastic and insane! I have the opportunity to put every ounce and any ingredient into any given tune. I’ve been taking my Thurs. mornings lately to work on my next record. It’s presently entitled “Space and Time”.

That may change, anyway.. I’ve been putting alot more “colors” into my compositions. I like it, but my fear is that I may over do it. Well.. not really a fear, I just don’t want to annoy people who presently enjoy my music.

I have several tunes in the “scratch” stage and I think things are progessing nicely. I’ve intentionally decided to take a very slow approach to this record. The last one I did in about a month and a half… the deadline was motivating, but I think the songwriting suffered some.

This time around I’m laboring over every aspect of the writing process. From the lyrics, to the melody, to the textures, etc. I have a couple of them posted presently: “Cars Are For Driving”, and “Can’t Make Ends Meet”. I’ll probably post more soon.

Thanks for listening, reading, and for your insights. Cheers, matt

Peoria Journal Star Interview with Matt Larson: "Back Home After A Real Tour"

When Matt Larson takes the stage at Eamon Patricks Public House on Saturday, you may want to congratulate him. He survived 8,684 miles in a 31-foot RV with his wife, three young boys and a lab/chow mix — all in the name of music.

Larson, a Bloomington native who also has lived in Peoria, has spent the last few years living a quiet life in Fort Mills, S.C., with his family. His music career was coming along nicely and he had several shows booked on the East Coast but wasn’t too excited about all the back-and-forth traveling it would require.

Larson’s wife Kara suggested they tackle a tour together — as in, more together time than most families ever know. They ended up selling their house in and buying an RV, which Larson calls “a glorified dorm room.”

“Everybody thought we were insane,” Larson said, “but it seemed like a good idea. Family is priority for us, and to really get your career going you have to be out playing a lot. It made sense for us to all be together.”

They stayed on the road for four months, homeschooling their 7-year-old (the other boys are ages 4 and 2) while Larson spent his evenings playing gigs in cities from New York to Washington, D.C. to Canada and the Carolinas. They almost decided to stay put for good in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania.

“It’s so beautiful,” Larson said of the area. “We were talking about making our way out to Alaska. But we didn’t make it past Illinois.”

The family was visiting Peoria in November when they decided to hang up the driving gloves. The weather was getting colder, and they had enjoyed reconnecting with friends and family; it felt like they had found something they had been missing for awhile.

These days, they are calling Peoria Heights home. The RV is in storage now and the family plans to sell it. Larson is focusing on booking gigs in the area; he has a show Saturday at Eamon Patrick’s Public House.

Larson said a critic has described his mellow, acoustic music as “Ben Folds meets Ben Harper meets Coldplay meets something else. ... If you find a category that I fit, that would be great,” he says.

Larson has created two full-length albums — “Elevator People” (2001) and “This Living Room” (2006) — and currently is working on his third, titled “Space and Time.”

The song writing will be a lot easier now — he didn’t have much of an office in the RV, and Internet and phone service were always spotty.

Although the whole journey may sound crazy to some, Larson is happy they went on the road.

“We stayed in some really nice campgrounds,” he said, and the boys didn’t mind the togetherness.

“If they have rocks and dirt and bugs, they don’t need too much else,” said Larson, laughing as he recalls ticking off about 10 orange construction cones in the RV during a moment of unbridled adventure, his three boys egging him on.

“There are not too many kids that say, ‘Yeah when we were younger our parents sold their house and bought an RV and went on the road,’ ” Larson said. “I think that will be pretty cool for them to talk about — later on, after they’ve completely repressed all of the horrible memories from the trip.”

Death and Taxes

I suppose it’s only me, but every year that I do taxes I feel quite sure that I am doing my computations incorrectly. I rarely know what questions they’re asking, nor to I feel inclined to better understand the language. I don’t believe I would be enriched or enlightened by a better understanding of tax code. Perhaps though, I would have more money in my pocket, thereby facilitating my opportunity to experience growth in other areas that I’m interested in. At this point you’re wondering why you’re reading this, and I am wondering why I’m writing it. Although the tense of each of our thoughts should be different. Confusion, as misery, loves company.

cheers, matt larson

Least Favorite and Why?

Rather than asking for your affirmation so that my ego can happily go about it’s daily existance, I’d like to hear which is your least favorite song and why. Bloody me up a bit.

LSU

well the show went great, no major mishaps.. which means this blog will be slightly more on the boring side. 12 hour drive tomorrow.. ouch. It’s funny that when my life is lacking chaos that I actually feel a bit uncomfortable. I’ve become so accustomed to managing some “thing” that when there’s a calm I’m not sure how to just relax and enjoy it. I’ll have to work on that. Good talking with you, cheers, m

OTR (on the road for you non-truck drivers)

I’m heading down to Shreveport, LA for a show at LSU this week. Now, typically I have some kind of travel woe to report. This makes for great blog fodder, but for a bumpy journey. So if you enjoy the suffering of others, or me more specifically, then it becomes a good read for you. I’ve been sick this week so hopefully my voice will have a cool “rough” sound to it and not just a “that sounds like crap” vibe.

Anyone else have a cold? I’d been fighting back one for a couple of weeks and was finally beat down last week. You’d think with all the cold medication that we wouldn’t get colds any more. We travel in space and yet I’m incapacitated by a little germ.

Time for some coffee, thanks for listening! cheers, m
