A Day In The Life

In the past, after finding out that I’m a full time musician, a lot of people ask me the same question, “So what do you actually do every day?” As it turns out that’s a good question. And if you’ve ever wondered the same thing, read on…

My name begins like so many other typical Americans – in bed trying to ignore the incessant alarm that seems hellbent on violating every international torture prohibition. After getting up about half an hour after I promised myself I would, I end up right here – on the internet. As you may have read independent artists these days must sink or swim with the internet age and the ones who succeed always spend lots of time blogging, communicating and marketing themselves online. (hint, what do you think I’m doing right now!). Interspersed with visiting/updating the dozen websites where my music can be found I send and respond to emails about shows, rehearsal times and any other queries that find their way into my inbox.

So that was the work, here’s the fun. Getting together with the guys who’ll be playing with me at my next show is always a blast. We generally talk about music, play songs for each other and work on learning the music together to make the shows excellent and fun for the audience. These are the moments when I stop and realize how cool it is that playing my guitar is actually my job! I also usually try to spend some time working on new material, although I have to admit songwriting is rather tedious for me.

So in a nutshell that’s kind of what I do every day. Of course, it’s the abridged version, but hopefully you get the idea. Please chime in and ask any questions that you might have, I’d love to answer!!

Peace, Alex

New Songs In The Works

I’m thrilled to report that I’ve got some great new songs that are on their way to the stage. Since my record release in January I’ve been mostly focused on getting the word out about it and playing shows to promote it. Now that summer is here and I’ve got some room to breathe, I’ve had the chance to sit down with a guitar or keyboard and see what happens.

I’ll tell you writing songs after your first full length CD is a really different experience. Having put so much time and creative energy into a record project you begin to wonder if you have any creativity left! It’s good to know that in time your mind and heart begin to find the words and melodies for something new and different. Songwriting is an amazing, sobering, challenging and wonderful process. As time goes on I just gain more and more respect for the song and for everyone who sets out to be a songwriter.

I’m so excited to add these new tunes to my set, they are definitely upbeat and fun! So be sure to come out this summer, you’ll be the first to hear songs hot off the press.

Peace, Alex

On Stage at Starr Hill

A photo from my last show at Starr Hill in Cville. Taken by the talented Eric Kelley. Alas, Starr Hill is now closed, but I will always have fond memories!

"How Do You Say Your Name, Again?"

When I introduce myself to someone for the first time, that is inevitably the first question they ask me. “Ma-hee-as,” I say two or three times, slowly for emphasis. “Meyheynu?” “Ma-hee-as!”

I guess this as good a place to start in getting to know me. Aside from my name, there’s not much about me that too hard to understand. Except maybe the way that I came into music by way of law school. Or that before 2007 I’d never written more than one song in a calendar year. Or that at one time my greatest musical aspiration was to the be the drummer in a Motley Crue cover band. Yet, somehow I find myself a “singer/songwriter.” Yes, I’ve been playing music since I can remember, but this all seems like a little much. I guess our dreams are not as far off as we may imagine. And between there and here, all of my experiences, good and bad, have shaped me as an artist and performer. Social consciousness from my background in the law, the love of a thumping backbeat from my days as a drummer, and a collection of songs stemming from years of silence. Put them together and you’ve got me, Alex Mejias, a guy with a name that’s hard to pronounce, but music that’s easy on the ears.

Hope you like it!! And thanks for stopping by my neck of the woods! Don’t be a stranger.
