I love the old Merle style country myself and though it is sad that it has gotten this way, but you can't just say a song is "country" any more. These days Country has become so broad a genre you have to put an adjective in front of it to classify the song. This song is what they call Traditional Country these days. I call the new stuff Modern Country or you can put the adjective behind it...Country Rock, Country Pop, Country Soul, nonetheless, the days of simply calling something Country are long gone.
