About the Young Hegelians You are here for one of two reasons. A) You have been on Google looking up the works of George Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. or... B) You have come into contact with Teesside post punk trio Young Hegelians. Either way, you are going to learn something new. Fig A) George Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel A German philosopher, one of the creators of German Idealism. His historicist and idealist account of reality as a whole revolutionized European philosophy and was an important precursor to continental philosophy and Marxism. The Young Hegelians, or Left Hegelians, were a group of Prussian intellectuals who in the decade or so after the death of Hegel in 1831, wrote and responded to his ambiguous legacy. The Young Hegelians drew on his idea that the purpose and promise of history was the total negation of everything conducive to restriction of freedom and irrationality to mount radical critiques of first religion and then the Prussian political system. They ignored anti-utopian aspects of his thought that suggested the world has already essentially reached perfection. (And yes, that has been cut and pasted from wikipedia) Fig B) Young Hegelians A jazz influenced post punk trio based in Teesside, England. They are made up of Carl Jackson, Ian Hird and Tom Sands. With a strong sociopolitical message to their lyrics, they tread the same path as Gang of Four, the Manic Street Preachers and Billy Bragg in being outspoken and wittily observant. With more than the average kitchen sink social commentary of most bands, they fuse this angst with muddied furious guitars and off kilter drum rhythms. They have recently completed two self-produced tracks entitled God Nor Money and Aung San Suu Kyi, one of which is available free when signing up to the band mailing list.
