Weather Pending consists of Rob Cross, Brian Neely Holtzman and Janie Oliver. Their music contains a rich audio tapestry of rhythm, poetry and music. Drawing from a wide variety of musical sources including jazz, classic R&B, hip-hop and reggae, they build a brilliant, singular sound: a funky mix of soul and electronic fused pop.
Rob Cross, a San Francisco Bay Area native, is a professional studio musician and engineer. With deep roots in hip hop and reggae, he adds an edge to the trio's smoother tendencies. Rob's academic studies have included the effects of digital technologies on society and art. This background informs his contribution to the ensemble which includes overall sound shaping as well as contributing his individual voice.
Brian Neely Holztman grew up in Miami, where he was exposed to an eclectic mix of culture, music and vices. Brian, however, did not pick up the guitar until age 20. What came next was a musical career that would take him to Europe and then across the US, to California. Doing studio gigs and odd jobs, Brian finally landed at Rob's Sunset District doorstep for a jam session in Spring 2007.
Janie grew up in a family of scientists and psychologists in the beach town of Santa Cruz, CA. From an early age she has found solace in viewing and commenting on the human condition through lyrics and poetry. The work of Paul Simon, Leonard Cohen, Julie Andrews and the edgier pop of the day, like Portishead and Smashing Pumpkins, have all provided inspiration to her own writing. Her voice, an amazing instrument and one of the most provocative aspects of the ensembles sound, is classically trained at the conservatory of music, where she also immersed herself in jazz, improvisation and songwriting.
Together Weather Pending is quickly winning new fans by opening up the sometimes constrained boundaries of the cities musical landscape. They provide audiences with a sonically pure and emotionally touching experience. Like much of the great jazz that influences them, Weather Pending leaves the listener enthralled and revitalized at the same time. Their music is at once brand new and timeless, and fans from across the bay area are quickly discovering this exciting new band.
15 tracks in a weekend!
Over the weekend SF had some perfect weather. The city reached its all time high of 70-plus-something degrees and had a light floating sent of sunscreen. The big parks were filled. Ocean beach…crowded like sardines. Ice cream lines looped around the block, while traffic line trailed into the city. People played in the sun as we started recording our first album.
In two days we recorded 15 full tracks – talk about a serious gig workout. We decided on 15 songs to record, but will select 10 for the album. Everything that went on tape was hot! Each piece felt good. If things felt really good we kept the two inch rollin. When we weren’t playing we were stuffing our faces. We have selected a few must try items: enclosed below.
