Biography

Raised on P-Funk and schooled in New Jack, Wallpaper mastermind Eric Frederic didn’t always envision the project reflecting these influences. He initially conceived Wallpaper as an experiment in pop satire. But at the height of Oakland’s “Hyphy Movement,” something changed. “I saw musicians representing that Bay Area sound. That same psychadelic, drippy funk, and care free approach that had been around since Sly Stone all the way to Digital Underground was re-surfacing. I needed to pay tribute.” Slinging CDRs, rocking house parties, and a deejay favorite, Wallpaper has become a gold plated name in the underground from Oakland to LA, New York to London. After two limited print EPs, the latest release, 2007’s T REX, features a gold-on-gold album cover and a platinum meets polyester collection of music. The goliath title track gives nods to George Clinton and E-40 while other songs like “Txt Me Yr Love” and “Evrytm We Do It” reference everyone from Keith Sweat to Kraftwerk. Wallpaper has shared the stage with Subtle, Sole, Darondo, LA Riots, and many more. He has also captured the attention of bloggers, college radio deejays, and showgoers alike with guerilla remixes of everyone from M.I.A. to Bel Biv Devoe, Souls of Mischief to Bobby Caldwell.
