Like many, music is Tom’s passion and from an early age he knew that was the path he wanted to go down. ‘With creating music for film and TV the options are limitless and constantly changing - the variety of music involved is something that is refreshing and interesting to me’. Tom was introduced to the guitar when he was bought a 1985 Tokai Stratocaster by his next door neighbour, an experience that he believes started him in the direction of where he is today. The next few years were dedicated to learning the instruments, mainly songs of his favourite bands but that developed into learning how his favourite bands created the music that they did - the technique involved and the theory. As he says... ‘My desire to learn made my decision for me and I went ahead and started at Grade 4. Learning scales, chords and set pieces was actually enjoyable as I could understand they would be useful tools to compose, improvise and study with in the future’. Tom was eager to move quickly on to a Music College after studying Law Psychology and English A Levels. The idea of studying Music and playing Guitar as homework sounded like the perfect scenario. After completing the Guitar Institute Diploma course and attaining a Merit he decided to stay on for a further three years on the Degree programme. The Degree built on the foundations of the Diploma and really concentrated on all of the content covered from it. As well as the performance element, which was the main title and focus of the Degree, there was a production and composition module which really intrigued him. ‘Coming into this, on year two, I had never really composed using a computer and its software. Up to that point I was a Guitarist - playing and performing on my instrument. Since seeing the capabilities and possibilities of creating pieces of emotion from a single lonely piano to a huge orchestra by using technology I was blown away’. Since early 2010 Tom has found a real love for working in his own home studio composing music that has a relationship with visual media. In the summer of 2010 he had the chance to work for Ross Power, now considered a good friend, gaining experience composing scores and performing guitars for two films (Worm - London Short FIlm Festival) and was also lucky to be invited to attend the recording of the Grolsch Christmas Advert at AIR Studios as an assistant to the musical director. Juxtaposing this with studying a masters in ‘Composing for Film and TV’ at Kingston University, Tom has jumped into this field of work with both feetin order to succeed. Currently Worm is being shown at the Arizona International FIlm Festival
