About The Five One

Portrait of The Five One

The DMV (Washington D.C./Maryland/Virginia) color-coded quartet (members Red, Blue, Green, and Gold) uniquely blend Pop, Rock, and Hip Hop. Their latest effort, titled “5109: The Remix Album,” showcases 51 remixes produced in 2009.

The remix project has garnered the attention of the Hip Hop and Indie Rock blogosphere, with remixes of various artists such as Bob Marley, Weezer, Daft Punk, Kanye West, Death Cab for Cutie, and Lauryn Hill.

The DMV is blowing up as one of the most hyped and innovative areas musically. The Five One represent the area with their band name, which declares the area as the 51st state, and also by consistently incorporating the nation’s capitol as a theme. “District of Colossus” is a DMV anthem, honoring the area’s music scene and cultural relevance. They sample Vampire Weekend’s “Kids Don’t Stand a Chance” and borrow a chorus from one of their original singles, “DC Sleeps.”
