Two for one, a deal you can’t refuse from T9K, a duo out of Morehead City, NC. First off is Philla Aka Sam the man he delivers a straight shot at you, giving it to you raw and point blank. You can’t help but to put the state on your back and get get, get it as he gets the whole Carolina crunk with the hook and style. On the other hand is Ski aka lil Skeezy gives a smooth approach but delivers it in a way like no other. These up-and-coming rock stars don’t only write their own songs they also produce them, all real music that a real person can feel. It all started back in 2000 when the two first met. Ski use to freestyle at school, Philla already was a part of the group tech nine killaz, which consist of him and two other artists. One of the artists was listening to secession one day and went back and told Philla that he had a rapper. That same night Ski went to lay his verse down to get respect from the group. After the verse was done tech nine killaz was now a 4 member group. As time went by the group would go to a neighbor’s house to record some tracks, which at the time they were putting them on tape just to listen to themselves. “We were young and didn’t take it as serious as now” is what they say as time goes by the group split up Ski went to college while Philla went back to the streets. It was the summer of 2003 when the two met back up. Ski dropped out of college and came back home. While walking in town he ran into Philla, after a few words Philla ask Ski if he still was into the rap thing. Ski said he did, and that he had a few hooks that he wrote in school. So they went to Philla’s grandfather’s house and took a little stereo on the porch to listen to beats and rap over. After the first hook was done called “the head” the two started getting into the music thing more. They started meeting up more often to practice and rap to get a style. By the next year they went to the studio for the first time and dropped da head a street anthem that represented their hometown and what goes on in the streets. Soon as the word gets out that the group was putting together an album, an old friend of Philla name B. Odell ran into each other and Odell told him that he makes beats and he wanted to produce some tracks for him. A couple days later Odell met up with Philla and Ski and had 10 beats on a cd. This was a turnaround in the style and image the first tracks were off the internet but these beats haven’t been heard before. The group did tracks such as “hey Shawty”, “I Met a hustla”, “Dirty South Lanes”, and “In the Club all produced by B. Odell to then finally releasing their first album Time Will Tell by August 2005. Which also had a few spins on the radio 97.3 fm in Wilmington, NC B. Odell mother owns a marketing company and has her own designers that did the artwork for the album which looked very professional for an underground album with the cover and graphics? After the album was done Odell would bring his keyboard and show Ski how to make beats. After practice and practice he finally got his swag on. Tension grew, the group had arguments of getting things right and were they were going be just some local group. B. Odell beats were starting to lack what they really needed to make people move and bounce. Philla and Ski started researching. Boards, beat machines, and many different software programs. By the next two years the group t9k was back at it, dropping a local street classic underground mix tape Go Hard or Go Home. Not long after they met and performed for young cash at a local club. They proved that their dream still lives and aint nothing going to stop them from making it happen. With bangers such as “Brought it Back” where Philla makes you get wild with his new style followed by Ski on the beat was a different look for the group. They started thinking more of a business way to the rap game and really get into it. A friend from the streets was asking what t9k meant and at the time it was still tech nine killaz but he was like “nah man its gotta be Two Born Kings”, which the born from nine comes from being that its nine months in a pregnancy he explained that they were the new life of the streets the new born and if you can handle your own you a king so the group was like yea that sounds better, so from then on it was Two Born Kings. Ski kept working on making beats while Philla was perfecting his style and helping make beats the two started putting their heads together and making beats every day. They brought a Roland phantom x6 keyboard, and then where ski was tryna learn how to set up a track because this was a totally different setup. Philla began to look up how to work it and do other things to bring the beat out. By the next few months it was done. The two started putting it down letting all the pain and struggle they went through into their music in both the lyrics and beat. A few legal situations still can’t hold these kings down, after being arrested for selling drugs the two still manages to keep their head in the right direction, even tho they haven’t dropped or released anything at the time at the studio for a while. Philla says “I think god did this for a reason so we can see what talent we got that can’t go to waste”. After the convictions Philla started saying its either make this happen or we gone be stuck selling or flipping burgers. The two got on their game stronger started coming up with unheard tracks that can change the game. They started calling Dj’s and managers to get the group really established. They got in touch with dj reflection and dj Barry bee two big Dj’s out of the Carolina’s. The Dj’s told them stay on your grind and give them that heat. After a few months later they finally finished their newest mix tape Go Hard or Go Home vol.2 soon to hit the streets and local stores everywhere real soon shows that these guys got next up. From the first album they told you time will tell and as time went by the two has perfected their own swag and style, making you bounce and go crazy with tracks such as “I’m Jigging”, “Starving”, and “Wake up” keeps their fans pleased that two born kings is truly the next life to the rap scene given you tales of struggle hustle and pain you can’t help but vibe with these country Boys
