About Sona Kelsaw

Portrait of Sona Kelsaw

Riding in the car with my three older sisters and one older brother, I was always told to shut up as I sang along with what ever song was playing on the radio. Singing since I was old enough to carry a tune, and the youngest of the brood, I was never discouraged. Singing was in my soul.

Born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, a jazz town, it makes perfect sense that Jazz is my first love. Back in the day, one of my dad’s closest friends had played for Billy Holiday whenever she came to town. 18th & Vine was the spot where it all happened.

I traveled extensively after college, first touring overseas with the USO, then performing all over the United States with a musical theater company out of Dallas, Texas. After all that, I formed and lead my own band in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Looking for something bigger and better, I migrated back to Kansas City where I got married and started a family. I moved to Long Beach, California and began singing and showcasing all over Los Angeles, looking for that “deal”. Jazz deals were not the order of the day for a 24 year old singer, and most producers wanted me to go pop, ala Whitney Houston. I preferred to go pop ala Natalie Cole.

Never wanting to compromise what was in my heart, I never gave in and decided to just keep perfecting my skills as a jazz artist, songwriter and arranger. Nowadays, I coach young singers and I also co-manage a few young artists along with my husband. Life takes you where it wants you to go and my singing career has taken a back seat to my very busy duties as a manager and creative director.

Still, somehow I managed to filter out my upcoming debut EP and the offers to perform are now beginning to pour in. Everybody I know has asked me when I was finally going to do a project of my own. I just love the kids so much I always seem to put them first.

Older and wiser now, hopefully I just got better with time and you will appreciate me and my art for what it is. I hope you like it and I am grateful to have to opportunity to share it.
