Smart Charlie has a long and arduous history. We started out as Dora the Exploder. This was Clint Hoekstra on guitar, Dan Wilberg on guitar, and Johnathan Honch on drums. Clint played blues and punk, mixed with Dan's thrash, and John's ...tom rolls? Eventually we needed a bass player, and Anthony Boyles filled the position for a battle of the Bands in 2007. By this time the drums had changed hands from John to Evan "Shirtless" MacWilliams. He was a very talented improv drummer, considering his only live appearance with us was only two days after he had learned of the songs he was to play. Sean Goulden briefly played cowbell for us around this time, as did Dan Kramps of Archilles. In 2007, as we adopted the name Smart Charlie, we also played a jazz show with a drummer named Ayrton Markowski, and at this time Nicholas Diaz - a jazzy euphonium shredder - joined on as the rhythm guitar, and would thereafter take-over the job of crazy solos. Sheemon Sohn took over vocal duties at the Rock in the Park Music fest, as did Joshua Macedo with his magnificently duct taped drumkit. In 2008, William Lau made an appearance on erhu, and the side-project Digit Severence Package was spurred. It was Dan and Anthony's improv material. Clint and Dan have now taken over as the current formation of the band. Dan voxalizes and shreds while Clint bashes out beats. They write surf metal. Anthony has joined a groovy jazz band with Nick and James Cambell.
