Biography

“We were forty-or-so miles west of Dallas, and at about 2 a.m. I looked out the side- view mirror to see sparks flying by the wheel well, as the speedometer reading started to drop, along with my stomach. I realized that the tire on the trailer had blown, and I should have known the trip home was going too smoothly. I should have known that there was plenty of time for shit to go wrong…” Rock fans will find that there was one word to describe ’08 for Simplistic Urge: perseverance. Formed in...

Formed in ’03, the band lineup remains: Tim Flynn- Lead Vocalist, Matty- Guitar and Backup vocalist, Michael Styrczula- Guitar and Backup Vocalist, John Haracz- Bass and Backup vocalist, Chris DiDomenico- Percussion. Even though the Chicago winter was cold, the year started off red hot, as MTV 2 featured SU as one of Chicago’s local bands in the segment “On the Rise”. A camera crew was flown out to Wall to Wall studios: the site the bands ’07 recording “Drown in Your Own Demise.” The band also returned to Illinois Suburban Nitelife’s Best of the Burbs Awards ceremony, accepting the ’07 award for Best Alternative Rock Band. SU is currently competing in the Best of the Burbs ’08 competition, defending their title, while competing in 14 musical categories. Simplistic Urge was also one of 5 Chicago local talents picked by Q101 to play the Q101 Block Party with Avenged Sevenfold, Theory of a Dead man, Sick Puppies and More. Regional touring in Wisconsin, Kansas and Ohio have been great experiences in the past couple of years, but the band’s biggest touring accomplishment came last spring, as SU played during the annual South by Southwest Music Convention ’08 in Austin, Texas. During the tour, SU teamed up with The Heroine, a rock band from San Antonio, bringing Illinois Melodicore and Texas Rock n Roll together. Talks of SU and The Heroine teaming up for a ’09 West Coast tour are also in the works. As a result of ear-pounding metal, guitar flips, and solos played in the streets (literally), Captivia Records and Chris Perez have invited the SU boys back to SXSW to take over Austin. Last year saw three shows at The Troubadour, but ’09 brings SU to the Captiva Records, Red Gorilla, and Texas Rock Fest stages, as well as touring dates in Missouri and Iowa along the way. In the band’s 5 year history, Simplistic Urge has shared the stage with other truly talented bands including Gwen Stacy, Memphis May Fire, Letter Kills, Chevelle, Collective Soul, Lucky Boys Confusion, and many more. The growth of an American rock band is truly exciting to witness, and the transformation of Simplistic Urge’s music has been no exception. In the last year, the hardcore-pop driven ’07 EP “Drown in Your Own Demise” compelled the group to build on the sound even more, breaking through and revisiting genres with more aggressive roots. Undertones of metal, Hardcore, and Southern Rock come forth in SU’s newest writing, with one goal in mind: the band’s first full-length album which their fans deserve. Talks of bringing back Grammy nominated producer Steve Russell (As I Lay Dying, Sworn Enemy, Blindside, etc…) are underway. Even though the song selection and title of the album are not finalized, the SU boys know not to let up. “The sun came up finally, after waiting over three hours for the AAA truck to get here. We’ve discovered that the rubber has literally tied a knot around the axle of the wheel. Man, we drove this damn van into the ground…”
