Shelly Williams is one of the few artists today where what you see is what you get. Actually, that is the way she has always been. When you first hear Shelly, you can sense the passion in her voice. She’s a singer and songwriter who prides herself on the ability to capture everyday challenges, employing music to cope through the difficult times while still reflecting on the positive. When you listen to Shelly’s lyrics you find yourself relating to each word as if she had opened a diary of your life and translated every emotion into song. Shelly grew up in a small town outside Tuscaloosa, Alabama called Coker. She began singing at a young age in the church her grandfather pastured. At age 12 Shelly had her first Country band called “Shelly and the Renegade”. At age 15 Shelly and her younger sister Summer were offered a Christian record deal on an independent label. They had two Top 20 hits and one song was even nominated for Song of the Year at Dove Awards in 2000. At touring for 4 years as a Christian artist Shelly realized her style was more appropriately suited for the Country music genre. She moved to Nashville in Feb 2001 into a tiny apartment in an area of town she could afford. Shelly recalls “I was terrified especially after my family left me. I realized that I had made it this far, it was too late to let my fears or failures get in the way.” Shelly began to do everything in her power to meet musicians and songwriters around town, including countless hours at writer night’s introducing herself to fellow artist. One night Shelly went into the Nashville Palace where Tim McGraw’s band The Dancehall Doctors was the house band. She got up and sang a song and afterward Tim’s lead guitar player offered to produce her first demo in Nashville. “That moment was incredible. I was truly honored and that moment is something I will never forget.” Having an album with original material has enabled Shelly to extend her ties within the music community by introducing her voice to the industry executives and fellow writers. Traits like Shelly’s are hard to find because few artist possess the charisma and talent along with distinctive voice and style to set them apart from the aspiring musicians that come to the Country music capitol of the world in hopes of fulfilling their dreams. It is a safe assumption to say that you will be seeing much more of Shelly Williams!
