Rob Young, aka Robert Young McIver Jr. (hence the stage name Rob Young) no fictional monikers or made up names here. Born in Sanford, NC aka The “San Trap”, into a family, that consisted of a singing mother, singing father and singing sister five years his senior. Inevitably, he had no choice but to sing as well. At the mere age of five he began singing in his church’s youth choir where he learned the basics of vocal technique and voice control, but gospel music wasn’t the only genre to influence young Rob. He was exposed to an eclectic mix of artists thanks to his father‘s incredible vinyl record collection. On any given day you could hear the likes of Billy Eckstine, Marvin Gaye, Herb Albert, The Dixie Hummingbirds, Stevie Wonder, The Doobie Brothers (the list goes on and on) playing on his father’s stereo. Growing up music always played an integral part in Rob’s life. He would wake up to music every morning, ride to school listening to music, and sometimes even go to bed with the soulful sounds of his father’s favorite R&B crooners softly playing in the background. Although music was very important, it always held a close second to Rob’s favorite extra curricular activity, sports. A true natural athlete, Rob took to just about every sport he played like a fish to water. Needless to say, sports consumed most of his free time leaving music on the back burner. That would change when his sister’s first husband introduced him to the wonderful world of DJ’ing. At the tender age of ten, Rob was taught the art of spinning records by his sister’s boyfriend and one of the towns hottest DJ’s (DJ Whiz Kid, R.I.P.). To no surprise of his, he fell in love with the art and ultimately played his first gig two years later at age twelve. Not only did this create a new love for Rob, but it also exposed him to tons of new and different music that he had never heard. By finding a way to have time for school, sports and music, Rob would later put together a plan that would lead him to being a quite popular name on the campus of UNC Chapel- Hill. While attending the university on a baseball scholarship, Rob would often DJ at local clubs and on campus parties and even began branching out to parties on other campuses to make extra cash. Ultimately landing him gigs opening for such names as Fatman Scoop, DJ Clue, and Biz Markie. His most memorable gig was DJ’ing concert after party for Notorious B.I.G. and the Bad Boy family. After college and a short stint in minor league baseball, Rob decided to move back home to NC and begin his journey into the music world. At first his only aspiration was to become a successful producer and songwriter, but lack of dedication from the artists he was working with, led him to make a decision to put himself in the forefront and sing his own songs. He knew that he was a descent vocalist so he decided to give it a shot. Early on a lot of his songs were very simple and many sounded quite similar. But as time went on Rob began to truly understand how to write, produce and arrange great songs. He was fortunate enough to co-write a song that is featured in the film “Man of The House” and as a performer has opened up for the likes of Lost Boys, Faith Evans, Omarion, Pretty Ricky, Yo Gotti, and the list goes on and on. Currently, Rob is working on a few projects that include his own solo R&B album as well as a Hip-Hop album with long time friend and colleague Snatch. Rob’s blend of Soul/R&B infused with Hip-Hop and Folk from his childhood influences is a brand of music that is sure to have you listening, thinking, dancing, bobbing your head as well as singing along. Once you hear his soul heavy production and arrangements along with his dynamic range and lush harmonies (which he sings all voices) you will truly know that Rob Young’s time is now! So keep your eyes and ears open for this incredible singer, songwriter, producer and engineer.
