Real J.O.B first picked up a guitar in May of 2007, the day after completing his MBA degree from Pepperdine University. Trying to play the guitar and sing for the first time wasn't a pleasant sound to his roommates and neighbors. It was also a shock to his friends and family, who kept asking him when he was going to get a "real job". Even Real, formerly called "The Eel" by friends, initially had doubts about his ability to become a musician. But his inspiration, a flash in which he saw the future while giving a thank you speech at his MBA graduation party, was too strong. He had to do it. Or at least try. So much so that he put all of his spare time and energy into the music. He learned to play the guitar quickly, learning hundreds of songs, and after 10 months of playing, in March of 2008, he performed a cover of a Bush song, "Glycerine", in front of 400 people at his work's annual talent show. A week later, he lost his voice and could barely speak without discomfort due to over-training. But he didn't give up. He slowly rehabilitated his voice back into shape, and with the help of a vocal coach, learned how to speak and sing correctly. Working at a college, Real's "real job" is to advise students about educational opportunities. He encourages students to follow their hearts and dreams, so it's not surprising that when he completed his MBA he put his heart and soul into the only thing that truly interested him, music. By late 2008 he was writing his own music and he quickly formed a band which played its first show at the Redondo Beach Earth Day Festival on April 25, 2009. The band dissolved soon after but Real kept working and playing. He practiced and performed with his friend Chuck on a number of occasions, and continued to write more and more songs. After leaving his vocal coach in August of 2009, he began intense vocal training on his own, and with the Per Bristow voice method, which he found highly successful. Do You Believe in Past Lives?? The Making of "Let Go" In October of 2009 Real casually inquired into a "free past lives" reading that was advertised in the local paper. Little did he know that he would be presented information that would take his songwriting and music career to the next level. He was told by the counselor that he had been married in six prior lifetimes with [the person that he would soon after write the song "Let Go" about], the last of which was in 1607, in Yerevan Armenia, a place near Turkey. Initially skeptical, when he heard "Turkey" he was taken aback. Twelve years prior he had had an unforgettable and puzzling vivid dream involving a girl named "Adana", a name that he discovered years later is a city in Turkey. A few weeks later, while walking, the chorus of "Let Go" popped into his head. The next evening, November 11, 2009, he sat down and he finished writing the song. He knew immediately that "Let Go" was the most important song that he had ever written, and he made plans to record the song and music video, which were both completed within a month. Performing & Radio Play Real J.O.B's first album, "Let Go", was produced by his friend and former bass player, Michael White, at The Song Shoppe in Santa Barbara, California. The first single on the album, "Lucy" is now playing worldwide on Jango radio. Real has been performing at local Farmer's Markets, Venice Beach, private parties, and street performing in Santa Barbara to promote the album. He is currently putting together a band which will perform at UCSB's "Battle of the Bands" on February 24, 2011.
