About Pepi Ginsberg
Pepi was named after her grandmother, a resistance fighter in World War II. With the help of Pepi's grandfather from across the ocean, whom she would later meet in person at the Copacabana in New York City, her grandmother organized the refugee ship, The Exodus, to usher holocaust victims to safe harbor in Palestine.
A Connecticut native, Pepi was editor of her high school newspaper, a position Truman Capote once filled. She recorded her sophomore album “Sometime Momma/Sometime Babe” in her apartment bathtub in Brooklyn, NY. Upon returning home from a tour in support of “Sometime Momma/Sometime Babe,” Pepi found a bottle with a note in it at the foot of her apartment door. The return address was from Philadelphia musician Scott McMicken (Dr. Dog) who had written to Pepi asking if she would like to record a song with him and RED was born…
Although new to the scene, Pepi is quickly garnering acclaim for her voice, lyrical songwriting and live performance. This year Popmatter's Kevin Pearce listed Pepi as SXSW's 'Find of the Festival' and described watching Pepi, saying "the tunes we hear tonight sound like Patti Smith covering Bob Dylan. She soars and warbles, yodels and cracks; her voice belies her youthful looks; structured and strong . . . a vote for Pepi is a vote for excellence." As Reed Fischer from Paste describes it, "her voice - the most evocative and unique that I've heard since Joanna Newsom - is genuine and even more stunning in a live setting."
