Born & bred in Augusta, Georgia, NoStar is a nationally touring rock ‘n’ roll trio that blends the roots of rock ‘n’ roll with what is happening now. They’ve performed over 80 shows this year since the January 15 independent release of their full-length debut and have traveled the map from Denver to Boston twice. NoStar is the brainchild of singer-songwriter Carey Murdock. Carey began writing and performing his songs in and around his hometown at the age of 15. One year later, his song “Sometimes”, a song about the pain and loss that often accompanies life, won second place for best song in a Georgia radio station sponsored songwriting contest. The lyrics are incredibly honest and insightful for a 16 year-old: “Sometimes life’s uncertain. Sometimes you don’t know where to turn. Sometimes life leaves you hurting Broken down on the side of the road. Sometimes the unexpected happens And all our loved ones seem to go. Sometimes all our friends betray us And life seems like its gonna be a lonesome road. But you gotta stand up and look ahead. Where there were shadows there is light instead. The clouds are breaking the sun’s shining through Don’t give up hope. This storm will pass soon.” In and out of several local Augusta bands and a few residencies as a solo performer, Carey formed NoStar three years later to interpret the burgeoning notebook of songs that he had been writing. Steven Bryant and Mark Whitmore fell into place as bassist and drummer for the group, and NoStar recorded its 8-song self-titled debut at Conceptualize Studios in Columbia, SC. NoStar is becoming increasingly well-known for their intense shows that mix a raw polish with the hard and the soft. Music is a calling, whether its delivered guitars raging outstretched over a Boston crowd, or passed around in an after-show acoustic jam of NoStar and Townes van Zandt songs in a Dallas back parking lot. The room packed or empty - it doesn’t matter – the show is going to be the same. The calling is the same. Pearl Jam used to play for empty rooms. So did Jeff Buckley. Led Zeppelin. Tom Waits. Those empty rooms are getting fewer and farer between for NoStar as they play and write on. The torch for rock ‘n’ roll will need to be carried on. Who will rise to carry forward? No one knows what the future will bring, but you should know this: If NoStar is playing in your town you need to be there – see it – hear it. It’s happening now… Bands NoStar has shared the stage with: the Ataris, Dead Confederate, Gringo Star, Buddy Jewell, Mountain Heart, Sequoyah Prep School, the Edison Project, Bamboo Shoots, Dave Crespo & the After Party, Ocean Is Theory, Lullwater, & more...
