Hailing from Northampton, My First Tooth (Alcopop Records) is the totally encapsulating, totally spine-tingling indie-folk creation of singer-songwriter Ross Witt and violinist Sophie Galpin. Taking influence from modern indie heroes such as Eels, Okkervil River and Neutral Milk Hotel, My First Tooth have crafted ambitious and beautiful songs that are both subtlety heartbreaking and unwittingly touching. Described by Rock Sound Magazine as “enjoyable alt-country”, live the magic of their performance is infectious; Ross on guitar, Sophie on violin, they are bound together through their complimenting vocals.
My First Tooth have a true unremitting love for playing live; Ross and Sophie only started performing together in October 2007 and to date have already clocked up over 140 gigs with countless more in the pipeline as both an acoustic 2piece and full band. In their short time of performing live they have played support to the likes of Shearwater, Joseph Arthur, Noah & The Whale, Pete Molinari, Johnny Flynn, Tellison, and Chris TT, and played support to Sam Isaac on his UK tour in June.
My First Tooth’s commitment to live performance has not gone unnoticed and the duo have already been the subjects of high acclaim with Marsha Shandur from XFM saying, “MFT are inexplicably lovely…Whenever I see them live – and I have done a number of times – I sit and shake my head in wonder at just how good they are”, whilst Noize Makes Enemies have said, “all things permitting, this lot should be a force to be reckoned with.” With recent plays from Huw Stephens (Radio 1) and an EP set for release April 6th on Alcopop! Records, My First Tooth appear to be ones to watch.
“Enjoying the same sandpapered finish as Beirut and Bon Iver, My First Tooth and the Rubies EP makes you wish for a front porch, a sunset and a song of your own to sing, that could match Honesty Honestly for it’s beauty. Typewriters almost replicates its namesake rythmically whilst it is steeped in honey-thick violin and melodies that reach for the open road. Oak cured alt-country” – Artrocker Magazine “…recommendations…My First Tooth” – Huw Stephens, Radio 1 “Simultaneously rough and delicate, MFT make music that’ll quietly ravage your heart, then give it a gentle stroke better. Killer pretty stuff” – XFM “…enjoyable alt/country…” – Rock Sound
