Momposonica was formed in mid-2003 in Englewood, New Jersey by five Colombian expatriates, guitarist Felipe Taborda, drummer Martin Quintero, lead vocalist Luis Garcia, percussionist David Pinto and bassist Alessandro Rueda. In 2008, the band split up and reformed as a four-piece in 2009, with Colombian bassist Mauricio Molina and Salvadoran singer–songwriter Carolina Craig. Momposonica is a mix of garage rock, pop, Latin and electronic rhythms. In 2006, Momposonica signed a record deal with legendary trombone salsero Jimmy Bosch's label, JRGR records. This same year, after several weeks of pre-production, Momposonica entered the studio to record their first self-titled album Momposonica with Jimmy Bosch. Jimmy is a producer and a world renowned trombonist, who has collaborated with artist such as: Ray Barretto, Eddie Palmieri, Ruben Blades, the Lebron Brothers, La India, Celia Cruz and Marc Anthony. Momposonica's first album was released in the United states on August 8th, 2006 by JRGR records and it was distributed by RED Distribution/SonyBMG. The name Momposonica refers partly to Mompos, a town in Colombia and partly to the American garage rock band The Sonics and pays tribute to the work of Afro-Colombian singer and cultural preservationist Totó la Momposina. In 2009, Momposonica recorded their latest album Sistema de Cambio, a more straightforward rock album that maintains their progressive Latin elements.
