Mathew Mason is from Louisville, Kentucky. Ever since Mat started listening to music, he had become increasingly passionate about it. Starting off with influences such as Hootie and The Blowfish, Sister Hazel and The Goo Goo Dolls, he grew curious about music and eventually became involved through the middle and high school band and choir. In between his sophomore year in high school, Mat moved to Virginia to live with his father who at the time was a self-employed contractor working at Smith Mountain Lake to provide for the family living back home in Louisville. During that time, Mathew found an interest for acoustic guitar after receiving free lessons from a local church. Due to time and management issues, the church put an end to having guitar lessons however, Mat decided to carry on in making efforts to gain instrumental capability from studying newer interests of music with bands such as Incubus, Dashboard Confessional and Jimmy Eat World. Throughout his senior year in high school, Mat was eager to having audiences listen to him and therefore teamed up with friend, Daniel Medley (currently drummer of “We Know, Plato!”) in creating a 4-piece indie rock band, “Thanking Speed’s Neighbor” (being both Mat and Daniel’s first time experimenting with putting on shows and writing albums). The band eventually broke up after their first tour in early June of 2007 over mutual feelings that it was time to try new things. Daniel then moved to Richmond while Mat and band mates, Sammy South-Finkelstein and Chris Mundy persisted to complete college. Mat continued writing songs through college and began working on his first album, “Sit Still, Relax & Chill”, with his cousin Jacob Clayton of Lost Colony Records first recording in Clayton’s garage then at Radford Baptist Church in Moneta then completing the 5 song album in a living room facility to a house in which Clayton rents out in Lynchburg, Virginia. Be on the lookout for Mathew Mason’s first solo album, “Sit Still, Relax & Chill” coming soon!
