Biography

Singer/songwriter Martin England believes everything you’ll ever write is already inside of you. “It’s really just a matter of the songs presenting themselves at the right time,” he said. “And pausing to recognize the moment’s taking place long enough to capture it.” England writes in the song-first tradition forged by the likes of Gram Parsons, Steve Earle and Johnny Cash. His songs are emotionally-charged, fueled by rich personal anecdotes, and his lyrics swarm the senses and rouse the imagination with their lucid imagery. In spring 2009, England signed on with Lost Sailor Records to begin work on his solo debut, Razed and Reconstructed, due out in mid-2010. Razed features some of the finest regional and national talent, including the 2009 International Bluegrass Association Mandolin Player of the Year Jesse Brock, Adam Terrell on guitar (Assembly of Dust), keyboardist Jason Cohen (Ryan Montbleau Band), and a rhythm section comprised of Mark Hickok (bass) and Steve Scully (drums) from The Singhs. Razed is England’s finest work to date, intimately exploring the fires of love, life and loss. Most of the songs were recorded completely live, capturing each song’s true essence without the compromise of glossy production. England fronted New England’s Pondering Judd for 16 years, writing all of the band’s songs, while capturing both regional and worldwide acclaim with their unique blend of rock, folks, and Americana music. His prolific songwriting led to the band recording six records in seven years, and also earned Pondering Judd a place in the Spotlight Hall of Fame after collecting 13 Spotlight Awards since their formation. Both solo and with Pondering Judd, England has shared stages with Slaid Cleaves, Guster, Rustic Overtones, and Del Sol to name a few. In 2006, he toured the US in support Ireland’s Sawdoctors.
