Make Me a Butterfly!
They were going by car and listening to the music… It was summer and they were in the South. They knew each other only for a few hours. She was an accidental stranger and he was ‘not yet famous’ Dima Snizhko. He switched tracks on the music player one by one, she was listening and nodding approvingly… And suddenly a Butterfly flew into an opened window of the car in rhythm with the music! That moment “Make Me a Butterfly” was born!
If that happened in the 60’s, they would probably have taken LSD and would be talking about soul intensity and opened hearts, freedom and equality, hypocrisy and truce. And the Butterfly would only be an illusion and a symbol of Beauty, – a very short term one. However, this story happened 5 years ago, and continues here and now!
And to be more specific – this story began even earlier and not in a car. It happened at the Institute of Music, where two students Dima and Max had met each other. Can’t say they were big friends – they were not, but on study’s duty they’ve participated in music activities of the Institute. Dima was an ordinary student with his personal ‘kinks’ in his head. He didn’t try to turn the music world upside-down. He studied scales, becoming a master living in his own present, unlike Max, who was making his personal contribution into the sound innovations. Upon graduation everything about these guys pointed to their life and creativity paths never crossing again. Max became thoroughly absorbed by business, afterwards he was involved in some music projects, and Dima wasn’t very clear as to how to behave in his present! The idea that he should be concerned with music wasn’t enough. Smallbudget bands, DJing on the radio didn’t bring him neither financial nor moral satisfaction.
In 2003 with advice and help from a wonderful person he found himself in a famous Production company, that is still the most successful and respected company in Ukraine. He stayed and worked there, writing music for commercials. There he had the possibility to share his music with everyone. Commercials with his music were awarded repeatedly, thus earning him respect of his colleagues. He never stopped composing. Every night he created the arrangments and very soon he got enough compositions to become a great foundation for bringing to life Make Me a Butterfly!
The gossips spread quickly in the music world, and the high society of Kiev was already talking about a certain Dima Snizhko. The only person who supported Dima was his close friend and member of the Mika Newton band that was already a very famous and successful project. Vitaliy is “that” cool guy who performed music sets with DJs in Kiev night clubs having great success. He was the first person not indifferent to Dima’s ideas after he showed him his unfinished songs that he created every night…
Liak (Vitaliy’s nickname) placed high emphasis on electromusic like techno, house etc. Despite different music preferences Dima and Vitaliy had mutual interest in their future project Make Me a Butterfly. They both wanted to create high-quality music despite the fact that they didn’t have the expensive equipment for that.
By chance they happened to be invited to the presentation of a recording company. There were many musicians, performers, producers, and there was Sasha among them, who had already won the Eurovision with famous Ruslana in 2005. Guys and Sasha had met before, while working on their mutual projects. During the jam session Dima found himself at the keys and it slowly turned into the beginning of the presentation. Suddenly Sasha changed his views and attitude towards Dima’s and Vitaliy’s work on Make Me a Butterfly. Afterwards Max joined Dima on stage and started to play the piano, mumbling something like “Let me show you how it’s done…” or “let me make it sound a tad better…”
Max is the person who spread the wings of the band and got the whole project moving.
While standing on the stage all together for the first time everything started to make sense. And everyone knew – Butterfly would live for long time!
Here and now. Make Me a Butterfly.
