Biography

Often in life, the most beautiful things spring forth from the tension--and ultimate blending--of opposites. For Philadelphia native Laura Shay, her last studio album, Bittersweet, encompasses just that: walking the fine line between love and loss, dark and light, dreams and reality. Often in life, the most beautiful things spring forth from the tension--and ultimate blending--of opposites. For Philadelphia native Laura Shay, her last studio album, Bittersweet, encompasses just that: walking the fine line between love and loss, dark and light, dreams and reality. Passionate and introspective in her craft, Laura is known for her intense stage presence, awkward innocence, authentic humility, and confessional songwriting. With the October 2008 release of Bittersweet, her second studio album, Laura Shay has come into her own with a new level of confidence that has translated into a new level of candor in her songwriting and of freedom in her delivery of the fourteen songs on the album. Shay’s describes her songs as her own raw reactions to stimuli around her. “I just let the music play me, and I follow.” Bittersweet was engineered and co-produced by Jeff Hiatt of Turtle Studios in Philadelphia, PA. Laura’s core band mates, Dominic Cole (acoustic/electric guitars), Andy McGowan (bass/backing vocals) and Michael Litt (drums) all contributed valuable parts to the making of Bittersweet and are fixtures at full band performances. Laine Walker (violin/backing vocals), Mike McCarthy (trumpet/electric guitar), and Karen Shay (percussion/glockenspiel) are welcome additions to Laura’s live shows and are featured on Laura’s latest project, “Blue Light Sessions.” Recorded live by engineer and studio owner, Matthew Bogacki, on 11.20.09 at Blue Light Digital Sound Studios in Mt. Holly, NJ, this 8-song record features two new, previously unreleased tracks. The remaining tracks are a select collection of songs from Laura’s studio albums, performed live with new arrangements. While Laura has been aware of the invisible, but very real pressure of the music industry to fit into a certain mold, she has actively chosen both to live life and create music on her own terms. Shay had earned a BA and MA from West Chester University in Communication Studies by age 23, and is currently working on a Master's Degree in Speech-Language Pathology while working full time. Beautifully balancing seemingly opposite worlds, Shay finds both stability and inspiration in the space between. When performing live, Laura Shay remains focused on the musical conversation that she is sharing with the audience. Every song is intensely personal for Laura, who at times finds it difficult to even let them out into the world. But audiences agree, Laura Shay is a force to be reckoned with onstage, and she is hailed for creating an intimate space where it’s okay to laugh, cry and feel everything.
