On the surface, the world of Karate Coyote is based simply on boisterous, eccentric, girl-boy pop. It is an alluring world constructed through artful collaboration and attention to beautiful harmony and hooks. However, what lies beneath this utopia is a foundation based in both creativity and crisis. The 20 something sextet, brought together in the heart of the Midwest, are constantly battling forces that often stifle the aspirations of young artists: post-college confusion, pressure to find a successful vocation, lack of support in the artistic community, and so on. For Karate Coyote, this anxiety provides both the edgy foundation and the creative force behind the pursuit of radio-ready hooks and melodies. It has given birth to a unique musical blend where "indie pop simplicity meets precise Math Rock complexity" (Brian Baker, Midpoint Music Festival 2010). The oxymoron-like perplexity continues as other listeners have commented that the music contains complex song structure[s] that somehow [don't] confuse...(The Lantern, Columbus Oh 2010) and "time signature trickery hid[ing] behind singalong melodies" (Columbus Alive, 2010).
