Kal Gully was born Marvin Coats on April 25, 1984 in Chicago, Illinois. He is a producer, songwriter and recording artist. He spent most of his life moving around the city and the suburbs. He eventually stationed on Chicago's West Side. Kal has been writing songs since he was fourteen years old, and upon hearing 2Pac AKA Makaveli's 1996 album, The Don Killumanati: The 7 Day Theory, he began to pursue hip hop. He grew up listening and became influenced by such Hip-Hop legends as Ice Cube, 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G. and Scarface. He started listening to Hip-Hop so young that he would have to sneak and take his father's hip-hop cassettes to listen to them. He also enjoyed listening to all types of music, from R&B to Slow Jams. He began his rap career in 2007 with his Hip-Hop group F.T (short for Family Thang). It consists of rappers Cockey Guns, Murda’Ry, Kal Gully, Hussein, Fiyah and R&B singer Toya. The group was founded by Cockey Guns and Kal. They added four members, Murda'Ry and Toya, siblings of Cockey, and Hussein and Fiyah, who are also brothers. All of the group members are first cousins, which made the group name Family Thang a perfect fit. In May of 2007, F.T began recording their unofficial debut album The Coalition: Volume 1. On July 18, 2007, The Coalition Volume 1 was released as a nineteen-track LP. It was independently released & sold throughout Chicago out of his trunk. It was extremely successful in the underground. It gained immediate popularity from the first two releases, “Whereabouts” and “Don’t Talk”. A month later, he began working on his solo project. In May 2008, Kal released his first official mixtape Gully as Ever. It was made available via his MySpace website and That Crack page, on January 28, 2010. It received over 60,000 listens, and 2,000 downloads in the first week of release. It provides insight into the mind of a changing man. From the heartbroken tales of his family struggles during “Stronger” featuring Cockey Guns, to “What I Been Through” – songs best understood by a genuine hustler. Kal delivers provocative rhymes, with both a masterful flow and a wise perspective over beats by a range of producers. He is best known for his fierce lyrical style and ability to present stirring tales of urban life with pin point accuracy. Kal Gully lived everything most rappers write rhymes about but not all actually experience: drugs, crimes, imprisonments and gangs. Of course, such experiences became Kal’s rhetorical stock-in-trade. At the same time, though, he delved into street culture and flirted with danger, such experiences similarly characterizing his rhymes. He is a real life block hugger who happened to learn how to tell his story in rhyme In May 2009, he released another mix tape, Strength in Numbers, spawning an appearance on Coast 2 Coast Mix tape DJ Fern’s It Is What It Is with the song, "The Way I Feel" originally by Jake One and Freeway. It featured appearances from Busta Rhymes, Red Café, Jim Jones, G-Unit, Missy Elliott and many more. Kal plans to release his official debut album, Based in Chicago, in late 2010.The highly anticipated album features upcoming singles “She Holdin” and “Ostrich” produced by Liq Da God. It also features the hypnotizing club banger “She Say” performed with DJ International’s own Merc. His goal is to return Hip-Hop back to its essence as an important form of urban expression with Kal’s street swagger and authentic style. Online, Kal’s MySpace website http://www.myspace.com/kalgully shows an amazing 250,000 total plays and more than 950,000 profile views. The site features full-length versions of “She Holdin,” “Ostrich,” and “She Say,” featuring Merc of DJ International Records. All new tracks from his upcoming debut release, Based in Chicago.
