Everybody has a story. Meet Julian Ransom, or as most know him as Joon Speaks. Raised a nineties baby in Pomona, California, Joon ran his hustle, living through what most couldn’t imagine. Dealing with his grandmother in prison for 15 years of his life and his parents working all the time, his outlet was using his knowledge of the streets. He took to skateboarding at 10 years old and hustled anything he could. Crediting Anthony Mosley for inspiring him to skateboard, he received his first sponsorship in junior high from a local skate shop. This is where his first love was born. High school brought on new problems- his acting out took precedence in his quest for attention. At 16, he discovered another outlet- music. He started recording with Wayne aka “MSCHF” and though he was naturally creative, at the time, skateboarding was his first priority. Kicked out of high school and transferring to the next county to finish, Joon started college at Johnson and Wales University in Denver, Colorado studying nutrition. There, though still skating, his love for performing expressed feelings came in the form of poetry. With skating, music and poetry in his heart, his stay in Colorado was cut short two years into college; his grandfather became ill with dementia. With all that in his mind, he moved home. He then was invited to skate for legendary Tony Alva from Dog Town and the Z Boys. There, Joon helped to create Alva’s first “AM” team but as all else that came his way, it fell through after a year. His love for skating didn’t die there though- it continues on today. Giving back, spreading love and peace is what he knew his purpose on Earth was aside from his gifts and talents. In 2006, Hungry & Humble was born from just a local crew to a non-profit organization focusing on giving back started by Joon and his co-creator, Shane. Joon’s foundation and credits start with God, in everything he creates. Listen to his flow, breathe his lyrics, exhale his struggle.
