I joined OURSTAGE to enter the Keith Urban contest. To me it's really about the songs. Either you like them or you don't. So take a listen. My marketing bio and quotes are below. John Stowers has been called one of the most promising singer/songwriters in southern California. “A rootsy pop rocker with surprising soul. Songs filled with musical hooks and lyrical honesty.” John grew up collecting classic vinyl records from the sixties and seventies. He draws from this rich musical history when writing his songs. There are echoes of everything from Liverpool to Memphis in his music. “I have many influences, but there are two reasons I started writing songs: the Beatles and the Blues. I write alternative pop/rock songs along with more rootsy blues/rock tunes”, explains John, “I love big guitar and vocal hooks and I try to squeeze as many as I can into every track”. Stowers just released his new CD “Everything You Do”, which contains 14 stunningly crafted songs. The title track, “Everything You Do” was featured on a compilation CD of Los Angeles based singer/songwriters titled “Western Beat – Volume One”. “Jimmy’s Song”, inspired by watching two seasons of “The Sopranos” in one weekend, won John a 2004 Billboard World Song Contest award in the blues category. “Mrs Thompson” has been featured in two compilations including “We Call This Fab”, a compilation of original songs inspired by or in the style of the Beatles. “For Christ’s Sake”, a song promoting tolerance, has been heard on Los Angeles’ NPR and Pacifica radio station KPFK. The record is receiving rave reviews and critical acclaim including these two recent reviews from DC Concerts and Pasadena Weekly: “John Stowers is what you get when you cross Crowded House with a bit of Beatles and something else...more uniquely American. His songs have those great pop hooks we love to sing along with, while the lyrics are thoughtful, honest, and often very amusing. Wait until you hear some of the subjects he writes about! John also happens to be one of THE nicest guys in the whole music scene. You'll love his music and you'll love him, too.” - DC Concerts “Los Angeles based singer/songwriter John Stowers frames this solid pop-rock platter around the lightly sanded grain of his vocals, catchy hooks and guitar riffs a la the British blues and rock fare he grooved to as a teen. It’s studded with insightful portraits like the winning “Mrs Thompson”, which puts an upbeat spin on a husband’s death and the surprisingly dark revenge fantasies in “Till Death Do Us Part”, but overall, the record reflects Stowers’ abiding faith in love, life and romance.” - Pasadena Weekly Stowers is supported on his album by some of L.A.’s premiere players: producer/guitarist Edward Tree (Spencer Davis, Lisa O’Kane and David Serby), Bonnie Raitt percussionist Debra Dobkin, bassists Taras Prodaniuk (Dwight Yoakam/Lucinda Williams) and Kaveh Rastegar (Colin Hay/The Calling/The Ditty Bops), drummers Dave Beyer (Melissa Etheridge/Motels) and Nate Wood (Chaka Kahn/The Calling/George Harrison/Sting), cellist Richard Dodd (Smashing Pumpkins/Red Hot Chili Peppers/Dixie Chicks/Christina Aguilera), and harmony vocalists Teresa James, John Townsend and Molly Pasutti. Stowers has been touring in support of his new release. He was chosen to perform/showcase at the “Durango Songwriter Expo” in Santa Barbara, CA and Park City, UT. He has also played “The Inkslinger’s Ball” at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, CA, The Midpoint Music Festival in Cincinnati, OH, “Irishfest in Milwaukee, WI, “The Sawdust Festival in Laguna Beach, CA, “Seven Summit Festival in Phoenix, AZ and "The Rock & Roll Marathon" in San Antonio, TX.
