the day the music died

Does anybody play instruments anymore? That is a question that has haunted me since they started cutting music programs in school. It’s like the day the music died. Once a culture has lost its voice artistically, the end is not far off. Ourstage is renewing my faith in that culture. The music I hear on our stage is incredible and alive. With people like Peter Moore, XavierL, WP Smith and many others, I see that music has not caught a train to coast and left the culture.

Music will be free in 5 years

Question…

When was the last time you bought a CD? Remember back in the day when you would go to the record store about twice a month and by your favorite CD? Or even earlier, you favorite cassette or vinyl record? Well those days are gone thanks to the internet. This might be a good thing or bad thing. The Music biz is imploding on itself. Fact: the number of CDs sold per artist (signed to one of the Big 5) averages at only 1200 albums a year! People are just not buying music like they used to. Between the bootleg man and file sharing, why buy it when you can get it for free. This is bad the record labels, but potentially good for musicians. Think about it. Record labels are taking about 80% of the profit from record sales. For example… The average CD sells for $12.00. Distributor and retail are getting about $6. That leaves the record labels with $6. Royalties paid to the writers and publishers etc. is about $1.00 that leaves $5 for the label. Not a bad profit. But with bootlegging and digital file sharing at an all time high, the record company loses out. What is good for musicians is the live shows. You can’t bootleg a live show. I believe music will given away by the artist to promote the artist. The artist will perform the cd live and sell the product there.
