Jamil Mustafa is a Kansas based hip-hop artist, whose use of funk, afro-beat, pop, and dance music has fans scratching their heads..... in a good way. With eclectic influences like The Roots, Fela Kuti, Kanye West, Radiohead, Peter Gabriel, and Bjork, Jamil Mustafa represents where music is going while honoring where its been. As Jamil plainly puts it "I'm part boombox/part ipod". Jamil's sound is undeniably hip-hop, but still at home in today's post genre environment. Carefully written, but casually delivered lyrics make Jamil one with the beat, a beat that is as much Lagos as it is South Bronx. His style is as much conga and maraca as it is 808 and clap. With respectful nods to classics of all genres, Jamil Mustafa seamlessly weaves his influences and experiences into a "Next School" version of World Fusion, something he and production partner Nandez call "Brand Knew Music". Jamil offers something fresh for the kids in the club, the hipster bloggers on the net, and the socially conscious deep thinkers from California to Cairo. November 2008 marks the release of Jamil Mustafa's new album, Songs From A Small Planet. The 13 song project, featuring the club-friendly singles "Radio", "The Brand Knew", and "In The Zone", will be released on upstart indie label Brand Knew Music.
