Hi! I am a professional musician from Europe, and music is one of the most important things in my life.
My father – concert pianist – thought me music since i was 4. I studied classical music for over 22 years, then performed on stage, recorded music for radio and various albums, and collaborated with various European musicians. Over last 30 years i played various styles of jazz, funk, pop, jazz-rock, blues, classical, new age and experimental music. Some years ago, together with my band I won grand prix on one of top European international jazz competitions, as well as some other competitions. I also teach music, have radio talk show about jazz and classical music, and on numerous occasions was invited to jury of various musical events, etc.
I don’t write it to show how smart pompous ass I am. I write it to show you I have some reasonably good background in music, and I try to talk only about something I feel I know. Why?
Because I opened this account for listening to music and judging. And – I am tired of people who always write so many nice things about terrible songs. It is often not honest. And serves no good. It is not my way. Honesty – not B.S.
I don’t think this site is for complete amateurs and dilettantes to feel great about themselves. It is not a club of mutual adoration, to pat each others’ backs, and say how good we all are.
I believe this site is for musicians seeking their chance, new talents to be discovered – and such people should be here, getting good quality judgment.
For me -there is only good and bad music. Good music touches you, makes you feel it, brings you to another dimension. Bad music hurts. And some attempts – can’t be even called music – and should not be placed here. This is how I see it.
If you happen to be not really good right now, but you try hard and hope to improve – I know that a real, honest, and constructive critique can help you more than hearing that all is lovely (if you can take it without offense). I know such critique is important, because that was what shaped me as a musician – often mixed with sweat and tears.
Even if it is not pleasant – you should know how others see you – to get a distance to your work, and see problems. Only then one can progress.
And, when you do something REALLY good, you should also know it – and know that positive comment is also honest, not just B.S. We all – musicians – do our music so other can listen. so, opinion is an invaluable tool…
So, i write honestly what I think, and I don’t try to be nasty.
Hopefully my words can help some of younger musicians, or to-be-musicians on their path.
Best of luck to all talents here, cheers to other judging people.
