Linguistic relativism is a concept that hopes to explicate differences in language creating differences in cognates. The same could be said about music. Some people call it rock; others call it punk, electronic, nü metal, alternative. Albeit true that it’s all just music, each creates a different emotion and understanding to the listener. A genesis of these genres has the opportunity to create total dissonance – or a musical revolution that could breach all walls. At first glance, Hayden Calling looks akin to a Dave Matthews tribute band. At first listen, Hayden Calling is ilk to your typical band with your typical gimmick. Your first show, you may just start redefining your own notions of rock music. Like most good things, Hayden Calling started as an idea with a sense of purpose and no real map to get there. The spark eventually caught and a fire was born that’s been kindled by the overwhelming support of their fans. Completely self managed; the band has been enjoyed by people young and old, hard core and occasional, fans of electric and fans of acoustic. Hayden Calling is the serendipitous happenstance of six high school friends sharing a love of making noise. Jake, an ex-leader singer/guitarist in search for a new project was playing folk songs with a friend from math class, Buck. The two found themselves searching for band members almost constantly. Thanks to almost failing a music theory class, Jake had met Doug who began practicing with him and Buck and an instant chemistry was fused. Alex, a childhood friend of Jake’s started coming to practices at first to watch and kill time, and soon became a permanent member thanks to his penchant to, “make those weird sounds that fit just perfect”. When the band needed a drummer, they looked to Jason, a close companion of Doug’s and veteran of the percussive arts. The undeniable talent of the group only seemed to be more prominent. Josh, a close companion of Buck’s and multi-instrumentalist, had recently hung up his holy vestments because of an unshakeable call to weave himself into an alternate tapestry than what was first perceived. With this final addition, Hayden Calling was complete. The release of their debut album, “Mills Street Heroes”, in March of 2008 is the product of over 2 years of sweat, sacrifice, experience, and support. Featuring songs like, “California Bound”, “Girl in the Attic”, “Not Coming Home”, and “Going Down”, it promises to be a major achievement by the sextet from Wadsworth, Ohio. The story continues but the author leaves no ending. Instead we are left with the words said long ago, “You know not the day, nor the hour”. Hayden Calling added their suffix, “…so be sure you make it count”.
