Grim Demise was formed in 2002 by Richard White and Luke "Pendo" Pendlebury, former members and main songwriters for the power/melodic metal band Seventh Eve and keen instigators of the Newcastle underground music scene for several years. Driven by a desire to take their music in a heavier direction, and tired of the stale, boring attitude of local so-called metal bands, the two mates began writing new material and decided to form a new band. From the very beginning their sound was oriented a lot more towards thrash and death, as was apparent from the first fruit of their efforts "Reserved Hatred".The duo began auditioning for a bassist to complement the new arrangement, which so far included only a singer and a guitarist with a lot of ideas waiting to happen. After a brief search, Legion was named the bassist and the band (at the time still unnamed) was christened Grim Demise to reflect the much darker, sombre lyrical direction of the band. The lyrics themselves began to reflect the frustrations and trangressions that are pivotal to the human condition. After several long months of jamming and writing, the band recorded the early blueprints for songs such as "Through my Eyes", marking the beginning of a new development in their sound. With the addition of Davey on drums, Grim Demise had solidified as a band: rather than simply focusing on sheer speed and brutality, a mixture of melody and tempered songwriting began to surface. The songs began to grow, some spanning as much as six or seven minutes, with tempo changes, melodic interludes and old school-influenced lead parts reminiscent of eighties thrash records. Vocal arrangements were also expanded to include backing vocals, giving the band a more intense delivery.Around this time Grim Demise had the privilege of opening for Infernal Method at the Cambridge Hotel in Newcastle, which was a great way to kick off their soon-to-be prolific live appearances and even earned them a mention on Triple J's Full Metal Racket program. From these considerably encouraging beginnings, Grim Demise have gone on to perform innumerable more times around Newcastle, Sydney, the Central Coast and other regions of NSW (not to mention friends' parties and even your nanna's lawnbowls matches), and have supported the likes of:PsycropticLordMortal SinFrankenbokRather Be DeadDouble DragonVaticideLynchmadaMinus Life(Tocata)Inane EminenceTourettesDarker HalfAeturnus DominionThe BerserkerIt is now a few years down the track and once again Grim Demise has evolved. Following the departure of Davey in 2007 the band found a new drummer in Ben Good, who immediately took his place behind the (rather large) drum kit and whose energy and enthusiasm catapulted the power of Grim Demise's musical assault into overdrive. As 2008 was drawing to a close, the band faced a temporary crisis due to a certain lack of commitment and creative effort which forced them to part ways with their original vocalist. Shortly after this, Grim Demise's newest member Ben Rommell was introduced on second guitar to create a truly bone-crushing avalanche of sound. The material which is currently being written shows that the band has a lot of progression and promise in store for the near future, so make sure you don't miss their next live shows!Grim Demise currently have a demo available for free download on Myspace (www.myspace.com/grimdemise), or for those that prefer it old-school a CD will be offered for sale at live shows (while stocks last).
