The music of Gramsci Melodic came together in the spring of 2006, when singer/guitarist Martin began releasing demos to various websites using the Gramsci name. A significant internet following emerged and Martin decided to leave local post-punk outfit, buRgundy juRk, in December of that year. Gramsci Melodic was founded in January of 2007 and consisted of performance veterans Sean (drums), Tony (bass), Greg (keyboards), and Joel “The Duke” York (synthesizers).
Their sound has been described as funkyish alternative, pop-laden rock, electronic folk, adapted new wave, A.D.D. jam music and intelligent melodic biography. Firmly believing that it doesn’t matter what it’s called, but rather, how it sounds, the band members display ambivalence towards each of these labels.
The band has drawn comparisons to Fountains of Wayne, They Might Be Giants, The Eels, The Kaiser Chiefs, Harvey Danger, and Public Enemy.
Gramsci Melodic is named after the Italian socialist Antonio Gramsci. Antonio Gramsci was born in Sardinia, Italy on January 22, 1891. He was arrested on November 8, 1926 and committed to solitary confinement. He died on April 27, 1937 in Rome, shortly after being conditionally released from prison. The cause of death was a cerebral hemorrhage, which was likely a result of medical neglect while incarcerated.
