Biography

Tina Hung is what you’d call a “late bloomer” in the music scene. She didn’t acknowledge that music was her calling until after reading her horoscope one day, in late October of 2009. That’s when the light-bulb clicked and she realized she was a piece of furniture that just didn’t fit the room she was in. After much thought, Hung quit her “career.” She was supposed to be a chartered accountant. “I think my dad almost had a heart attack when he found out,” Hung jokes, “Being a musician screamed ‘starving artist’ and I think that really scared him.” Hung is a Toronto-born, Mississauga-bred singer/songwriter and started playing the piano at a very young age. According to her, that’s how she got her near-perfect pitch. “Playing piano early made up for the fact that I started singing late,” she explains, “I may not have sung the notes, but my ear was already trained.” Fast-forward to 10 years later, after going to university, working in the real-world and definitely after reading Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist twice; things started changing for the better “music wise”. Hung has always believed that everything happens for a reason -even when she’s on the chopping block of a singing competition about to get cut from the next round. That was precisely what happened in February of 2010. It was at that competition in which she met the most influential person in her music and life to date: Aj Bhandary. Hung didn’t know it at the time, but Bhandary was to become her mentor, producer, best friend and all-time biggest fan. “It felt natural working with [Bhandary]. Nothing was ever forced and great things would happen. We just clicked musically!” Hung says. “Aj was always encouraging me and he would constantly push my limit. I’ve written some really good songs because he believed in me and always made sure I wrote more. And more and more.” When we reached the topic of where she wanted to take her music, Hung’s answer was simple: “I want to touch people from all over the world with my music. I want to sing songs that they’ll want to sing when they’re happy. I want to sing songs that they’ll want to sing when they’re sad. I want to travel the world and share my passion with everyone who likes music because music has no boundaries. Music resides in our hearts, for music is the language of our hearts.” With Hung now re-aligned to her Personal Legend, singing to the beat of her heart, we’re sure to see good things happen for her. She’s always gazed at the stars wanting to touch them. She’s now closer than ever. Tina Hung is Hungtastic.
