I started playing music at the age of ten. In those days, I was in the fifth grade learning how to play the saxophone. By junior high I had been playing in honor band, and jazz ensemble. I had also learned to play the trumpet. The only problem was I never really learned how to play music, I learned to play the sax, and trumpet, and how to read music, but neve actually learned to play music. So I quit Playing for about five years. Then I joined the coast guard, and when you are a sailor on a boat, there is going to be a ton of guitars around. For the first time in my life, while watching someone play guitar, music actually made sense. I was 18. I picked up a guitar, and made slow painful progress, and wrote my first song, About the time I turned Twenty. I was enrolled in college at the time and I met a woman who was married to a drummer, they had just moved up from Memphis, and he needed someone to play with. So we met. His name was Jaremy Cockerham, and I learned to play guitar with him in a little room in Issaquah WA. After about six years of half hearted attempts to form a band being ruined by busy work schedule, I quit my job as a boat mechanic, and committed myself to my music. Not long after making that decision, I found myself in the company of Jim goforth, and Jonny Simpson. Team four, Jim plays bass, Jonny the cello. And such was the formation of Velvet Drive . As for this project, Emkaytwo is a place for songs that you wouldn't want to hear at the rock show, because they are so personal, and raw, they need to be stripped bare. These are the songs that will let you know me, and maybe they will let me know you too.
