Ranging from hard-charging and frank to strange and haunting, Dutch Holly’s sound is rooted in paradox. It occupies the weird interstices between the mystic and the absurd, the cheerful and the dark. Major chords and bright instrumental filigree are juxtaposed forebodingly under JR’s eerie melodies. Themes of witch-sense and non-sequitur, magic, evolution, and revolution find voice in her verse. Calamitous and peculiar guitars ring out over an insistent rhythm section that, at times, is so fast it’s slow – the way the spokes of a wheel seem to turn slowly backward when its rotation reaches a certain speed.
