Portrait of Darowyn

Darowyn playing the Chickenstock Festival

I’ve spent many years of my life assessing and grading new songs by my students. It’s a hard habit to lose. I’ve been doing a lot of judging on here, mostly in the “Folk” category so far, and I try to leave a comment on every track. I’ve always thought that it is very important to know how your songs rate against everything else that is out there, so when I leave a comment, I try to do two or three things. First, I want to tell everyone how I reacted to the song. This will be my own opinion, and if its a good song, in a style I don’t like, I will say exactly that. Secondly, I will indicate, politely and gently as I can, where I feel there is room for improvement in the songwriting, arrangement, performance or recording. No song is ever finished until the last singer is dead, and I hope that if I tell you that there is something on your song that seems like a mistake, you will take that as a well intentioned observation, not an insult. Thirdly, I will often write a comment on what is actually on the track. That’s partly to explain why I like it (or not), but mostly to encourage other people to listen. It’s vital to get your music heard. I do believe that a considered critique is much more useful to any musician than a quick “that’s awesome, man!” So listen to “Doormat”, and if you wish, make your comments.
