Crisalida was formed towards the end of 1997 rooted in the interest of Rodrigo Sanchez (Drummer from the power metal band Total Mosh (www.totalmosh.com) of putting together a project in which he could explore a more artistical and technical approach to music, rather than the crude brutal sound of metal he used to play those days. Along with his girlfriend (at the time, and wife in the present day) Cinthia Santibañez as a vocalist, they started searching for the right people for the project, finding the local virtuosos Cristian Carrillo (guitars), Manuel Soto (keybords) and Rodrigo Castro in fretless bass guitar. Together they started jamming, playing their favorite bands and composing their own material (very influenced by Rush, Dream Theater and Megadeth). On 1998, and after playing playing live several times at small local clubs, they recorded their first demo “Fencer” with very good critics, which moves them into the logical next step of recording in a more professional studio enviroment a 3 songs EP called “Contacto”, under the supervision of Carlos Cabezas in “Constantinopla” Studios. 2 singles went out directly to radios “Futuro”, “Concierto” and “Tiempo”, that gave pretty decent air time to a non sponsored nor label signed band earning for Crisalida excellent credits into the local chilean scene, which valued the original edge of the band with the line up of a typical progressive metal quintet, but with a woman in front (something very atypical and odd at the time, keeping in mind that this is way before Evanescence came as a mainstream, label sponsored, world famous band). Afterwards in 1999, the band went back into the studio (Akoustic) for their next record called “Ameba”, that earned them more credits into the local scene with more air time on radio and bigger venues to play.
Two years went by in silence due to the temporary break up caused by the resignation of three of the original members from the band (Manuel Soto’s trip to Mexico, Cristian Carrillo’s personal exploration of another art expressions, and Cinthia Santibañez first and second child births), in parallel Rodrigo Sanchez played in other projects with musicians from the local instrumental rock chilean scene such as Alexandros Tefarikis, Juan Anderson, Richard Pilnik, Rodrigo Vinaixa, Braulio Aspé (“Australis” and “Simbio6”). In the other hand Cristian Carrillo composed and recorded material for his still unedited first solo album with Nilsson Merello (Drums) and Hugo Fuentes (Bass), very talented musicians from Carrillo’s home town (Concepción).
In 2004 with the music always running through their veins and above all, with a stronger and more mature friendship, three members from the original line up (Cinthia and Rodrigo Sanchez along with Manuel Soto) decided to get back on track, and recruted Braulio Aspé (Bass guitar from “Octopus”) and Carlos Miranda (Guitar from “La otra calle”). Together they started working in new material and playing live again. In 2006 Cristian Carrillo gets back from a three year journey to the U.S. and claims back his spot as guitar player, some time after Rodrigo Garcia (From ASCP power quartet) fills the bass departament. This line up goes once again into the studio to record the first LP Album called simply “Crisalida”, recorded at Tarkus studios by Juan Ricardo Weiller, and mixed by Mariano Pavez. The record made it once again to Futuro radio, and some other written and online specialized media touring the country with great feedback from audiences, and media. As a result of this gimic, Crisalida is chosen to support “The Gathering” (www.gathering.nl) as the opening act in their show in Santiago. Crisalida is also chosen as “revelation band” in radio futuro and invited to play live at their Studio facilities.
After this succesfull period, breakup came once again from various personal and musical differences, resulting in the exit from the band of Manuel Soto and Rodrigo Garcia who take their own paths. After this episode, the remaining members start conceptualizing the sound they want to achieve for their new studio record and begin scouting for new musicians to fill out the spots left by Soto and Garcia. The name of Rodrigo Castro (original bass player) came naturally as for sound, excellency requirements and tastes matching, he was the perfect choice for bass player. Finally and after a very dedicated process of selection, the final and idoneous member of the quintet Felipe Troncoso, came along with a handfull of new textures, dynamics and harmonic exploration, enhancing the width of the band’s expressive range. With this elements in hands the band shuts away all live performances to compose their new album, with special dedication on arrangments, dynamics, athmospheric passages emphasysing team work over speed and individualistic technical playing. The album titled “Raco” is finally released on December 13th 2008, with again great response of public and crytics, a new national tour is currently underway.
