About Chenyelu Bomani

Dearborn, MI

Spoken Word Artist, Writer, Poet, StoryTeller, Music Producer

Chenyelu Bomani (chin-yay-loo bo-mah-nee)
Born, raised and educated in Detroit, Michigan. My interest in the Arts began at an early age dibbling and dabbling in plays, talent shows, school papers; art exhibits, etc.
Musically, my earliest encounter (aged five) revolved around a set of drums which belonged to a musician friend of the family. Later I would take formal guitar lessons but I preferred playing by ear and played at times with loose knit bands. I tinkered with the piano and organ also. My constant interest has been with percussion instruments. Music exposures were to the blues and jazz.
I began writing poetry and stories in 1967…Poetically, the street scene was my main stage. I performed at parks, festivals, street corners etc., and I also did some sets at Detroit’s “Rappa House” the “Moon Glow Lounge” and other places.
Needless to say, I was a child of the turbulent 60’s which had an immense impact on me in many ways. I obtained a degree majoring in Mental Health Technology and minored in Substance Abuse Counseling and these have impacted my works as well. My poetry was first published in a college literary magazine called “Jam Session”.
I have returned to my two original loves of poetry and music. I am busy resurrecting myself… writing poetry and stories, creating and arranging music. And I must say, that I have some sound bytes for your ears. So keep ‘em open because they’re coming at ya! To some, I’m just an old man but I ain’t paying ’em no nevermind, I still got something to say & play!
