Champ-Payne is more than just your ordinary rapper. His name was born from a horrific jet-ski accident that destroyed most of the upper part of his right leg. After 11 or 12 surgeries, 6 months in John Hopkins and a 3 month stint at Mt. Washington rehab, the future basketball hopeful was left to find a new Dream. In a vision one day at the hospital, the artist then known as D-Man saw his name right in front of him. As a bottle marked Champ-Payne with the date of his accident clearly as the creation date, begin to pour into a glass until it was full. Recognizing the clearity of this moment, he quickly scribbled down the name, and has carried it ever since. In the 8 to 9 years since seeing his vision...Champ-Payne has grown from a strictly battle punch line Emcee, into a more diverse conscience artist. After the birth of his daughter Charity and the change in hip-hop, Champ decided that instead of trying to be where hip-hop is at, he wanted to be where hip-hop was going. Making the decision to follow suit with the artists he grew up with (Wu-Tang, Nas, KRS-ONE, and The Roots) instead of the one's coming up now, what you hear today is a man who knows where he's going and who he is. Champ-Payne Da Iconoclast!
