Born in Montréal, Chantal Hamel (ccHamel) moved with her family to Coquitlam, British Columbia (BC) at the age of nine – an age where she could retain some memories of her childhood life in the native French culture. In her search for her identity, ccHamel discovered and explored her talents in music, art, and dance as forms of communication. It wasn’t until she reached her early 20’s, however, that she made her talents known to the public. She began revealing her creative side by producing and privately selling her paintings in Prince George, BC. Without mentorship or formal training in music and art, ccHamel pursued her education in science where she eventually attained her Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources Management. During her academic career, ccHamel began exposing her musical and vocal talents by entering Karaoke contests and participating in Prince George fund-raising events. ccHamel’s journey as a musical artist began in the late summer of 2005. Support from friends, talent, passion, and charisma had attracted for her many new opportunities. Since 2005, ccHamel performed in several events within her community, including: the National Anthem for the UNBC 2004 convocation, St.Jean Baptist at the PG French Canadian Circle, the National Anthem with a half-hour set (including a 25 minute set of her original music) for Canada Day 2005-07, SunFest 2005, 10 sets over four days at the PG Exhibition, her debut concert at Art Space followed by her first promotional cross-Canada tour (August 31 to September 22, 2005). In addition to this, she has performed in the First Nations Story Telling Festival Folkfest 2006, her First Annual Christmas concert at the Prince George Playhouse in 2006 and soon to come, her second annual Christmas concert in 2007. She was the main performer for several events during the National Volunteer Week (including CPAC Volunteer Appreciation Gala and the Prince George French Canadian Circle Hommages aux Bénévoles Gala), and the UNBC Honorary Degree Awards Dinner in 2006/07, PG Folkfest 2006/07, amongst several more small events and gigs. During this time, ccHamel has also had much exposure with CBC Radio, Shaw Television and PGTV. As an artist and musical entertainer with interests in multifarious issues (literacy, children and women welfare, environmental, and Urban/Rural Aboriginal), it is ccHamel’s hope to make her mark on society. She believes that music and art are the language of the soul – the language that tells stories and reaches deep within the human spirit. By sharing her gifts, beginning with her own community, she hopes that she can instill hope and courage in everyone to pursue their dreams. Her biggest dream yet to come true is for someone to discover her talents, believe in her abilities, and to help her become an influential performer.
