Cassie Morgan and the Lonely Pine have woven a “lush and rustic sonic world” of organic arrangements and delicate melodies with lyrics emotive of both weariness and child-like innocence. Though largely folk-derived, the music crosses over into americana, blues, indie, and even baroque-pop, drawing comparisons to artists including Hope Sandoval, Emmylou Harris, Cat Power, and Gillian Welch. While Morgan grew up in the rural background of Southern Illinois, learning western swing guitar from her great uncle, fellow collaborator Beth Bombara (the Lonely Pine) was raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan where she first began performing in an all-female punk band. Bombara (Eyeteeth Records) joined forces with Morgan in June of 2008, contributing background vocals, keys, percussion, and lead guitar among many other musical talents. Morgan is a 2009 Riverfront Times Music Award winner (Best Singer-Songwriter, Female) and was named Best Folk Artist in the 2009 Riverfront Times Best of St. Louis awards. Morgan’s debut album, the Pine So Sweet EP, was engineered, mixed, and mastered by Joey Lemon in Chicago, IL (Berry, Samantha Crain, Caleb Engstrom), and features the members of Berry (Joey Lemon, Matt Aufrecht, and Paul Goodenough), and Lindsey Czechowicz. Pine So Sweet was named as one of the top ten St. Louis releases in 2008. In June 2009, Bombara joined Morgan in the studio to record the duo’s first LP, Weathered Hands, Weary Eyes, released in April 2010. Joining forces with Joey Lemon once again for engineering, mixing, and mastering, Morgan and Bombara recorded 90% of the tracks live to analog tape for an earthier character, truer to Cassie Morgan and the Lonely Pine’s distinctive live performance. Weathered Hands, Weary Eyes is available now on iTunes, Amazon , and CD Baby.
