With a mix of influences ranging from Daughtry, Matchbox Twenty, and the Goo Goo Dolls, this young band is hoping to bring a wide variety of music to as many people as possible. Like one of the bands that influences their sound, Breckenwood hopes to stay connected to their Buffalo roots. Though Breckenwood is often harking to the rock or metal genres, these three men are not afraid to add a classic soft rock ballad to their set list.
“The beauty of this band is that there is no one genre that fits us to a tee,” Garrett Shea, one of the members of Breckenwood said.
The name, being a mix of two street names in the city of Buffalo, is not the only distinguishing factor.
“Garrett was driving and was passing the intersection of Breckenridge and Elmwood Ave., and thought it was sweet when he combined both of the names,” Brian Ort, another member said.
After forming in August of 2009, the band has quickly picked up speed by getting an article introducing them published on the Buffalo Spree, a local magazine, blog and landing their first show on the campus of Buffalo State College for the benefactors of the institution. More prospects of shows in the New York City area, as well as connections in Los Angeles, Breckenwood is ready to start making a name for themselves, starting with their first CD that is already in the works and will hopefully be out by the fall. A website is also on the way.
With such determination, talent, and chemistry, Breckenwood hopes to bring a new alternative, mainstream rock sound to new listeners, as well as current fans. With Micah Kokeny on drums, Ort on electric guitar and vocals, and Shea on bass, acoustic guitar, piano, and vocals, the covers and original songs this band plays are sure to wow.
“In this band, we are more eager to get out and play where as the other one was more of just jam sessions,” Kokeny said.
Meet the Members
Micah Kokeny (Drums): This 19 year-old drummer from Orchard Park, NY offers a driving beat to all of Breckenwood’s songs. After meeting Garrett Shea in ice hockey years ago and playing in a garage band with him as well, Kokeny is joining forces with him once again. As the prankster of the group, Kokeny brings more than just the heart beat to the band’s songs.
Brian Ort (Electric Guitar, Vocals): As a native of Rochester, NY, 18 year-old Ort not only sings and plays guitar, but helps write the band’s original music.
Garrett Shea (Vocals, Piano, Bass): The driving force for the band, Shea helps create the original music and mix the sounds. Doing much more than just playing in the band, he also acts as the manager.
