Avec Moi, French for “with me”, is less a moniker than an idea that 31-year-old Chicago native Joshua Dugue operates under. After exploring a variety of musical paths, Joshua devoted himself to recording his first EP with producer Eric Hufford for the better part of a year. With the release of his self-titled EP, Avec Moi explores the results of romantic wanderlust and lessons hard learned with dreamy atmospherics and gritty emotional guitar work reminiscent of Robert Cray. Dugue tells our common stories of love and heartbreak, with recognition and empathy. The music and live performances are a combination of melodic intimacy and lyrical storytelling. Citing such influences as Jeff Buckley, Pete Yorn, and Ray LaMontagne, Joshua skillfully crafts musical permutations of our most emotional experiences: passion, obsession, and heartache. Album highlights include “Crying Shame”—a pop centric, groovy I-told-you-so, and “Lonely World”—a sweet and cautious ballad that reminds us everything will be okay. Avec Moi is not the result of any singular experience. Rather, Avec Moi speaks to the collective hearts’ pain and pays homage to our experiences in this album.
