Ali Milner has been compared to songstresses like Fiona Apple, Sara Bareilles and Estelle. The 19-year-old musician with a pure sound and amazing vocal depth performs a repertoire of her own compositions with her band or accompanies herself on piano. As the British Columbia publication, the Ubyssey, notes, "Milner takes the audience on an impressive journey through boogie-woogie, soulful ballads, . . . rock 'n' roll, R&B, show tunes, old school - she does it all." Her new album, I Dare You, was a collaborative effort between Ali and a group of musicians that had only heard demos of the songs before entering the studio. Together they fleshed out the songs and recorded them live from the floor and to tape to really capture the essence of the music. The album launch was celebrated with an intimate concert at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts as part of The Live Sessions series, which selects B.C.’s hottest talent for one of only three performances. The show was recorded for a national broadcast on CBC Radio 2’s “Canada Live” to air in early 2010. Ali recorded her new album at Armoury Studios in Vancouver, collaborating and co-writing songs with the likes of Shaun Verreault (lead singer, Wide Mouth Mason) and Jim Vallance (Bryan Adams’ writing partner). The single “Crystal Clear” has been wowing fans via special live appearances and Internet downloads available at http://www.myspace.com/alimilner. The single “I Love Christmas,” which she released in December 2008, played on 62 radio stations across Canada - entering the AC charts at #20. According to Pique Newsmagazine, “. . . the musician's voice has developed, both literally and figuratively. She's moved away from that pure, unadulterated jazz feel and developed her own distinct, poppy take on the traditional . . .” A budding songwriter that recorded her first album at 14, Ali has collaborated with some of Canada's best, including Don McLeod, Sherry St. Germain, Davor Vulama and Aileen De La Cruz. She recently had two acoustic shows during the 2009 Western Canadian Music Awards Festival and performed with her band at the Westjet Street Party during the 2009 Junos in Vancouver.
