With a voice from another era & a distinctive lyrical candor, Darrell Austin brings his story to life. The Texas native started singing at the age of 4, first learning from his mother, then learning from popular R&B artists of the 90's such as Aaliyah, Brandy, Usher, Mary J. Blige, and Lauryn Hill and The Fugees. He privately threw himself into his craft in his teen years, using his poetry and alcohol to cope with family turmoil and personal unhappiness. It was at this time that the singer-songwriter began to explore different genres of music, starting with Amy Winehouse's Back to Black album, which led him to peruse the world of jazz and blues, favoring artists such as Sarah Vaughnn, Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington and Nancy Wilson. He began to further broaden his horizons to include rock and pop music. It wasn't until the death of his great grandmother in 2008 that Darrell's voice would actually be heard. He performed a rousing piano accompanied rendition of Encourage Yourself by Donald Lawrence which piqued the interest of his older cousin, a popular music producer in the east Texas area, who requested that he get in the studio with him the following week. Once there, Darrell felt more pressure artistically than he was able to handle and simply withdrew from music altogether. It wasn't until 2011 that he would perform again, this time at his college's Apollo Night. After receiving great praise and applause from his peers Darrell garnered 4th place in the talent competition, reviving his desire to pursue his musical ambitions. With his past behind him and vocals to lure the masses, Darrell is excited about his future. Expected in the studio by late 2012/early 2013, Darrell can be found diligently honing his writing and vocal technique by means of social media and different venues around the Fayetteville, NC area.
