Lyrics

Some folks, they preach what they don’t believe in. ‘Live all their lives cheatin’ and deceivin’, ‘til one day they turn around, claiming that they’ve just been found, and suddenly the world’s an evil place, and insist that now you see things their way. Well, I’ve never done wrong to no one, and I’ve been this way for so long, yet self-righteous folks feel they should change me. The Beale Street scene is full of hopefuls, each with a dream, though few are soulful. If you’re waitin’ to hear somethin’ new, y’all, don’t hold your breath for too long, ‘cause now rock ‘n roll all sounds the same. They don’t change the chords, they just change the names. If rekindled lines were like dimes, we’d all be rich many times, ‘cause no one has a new thought in their brain. Yet, the business thrives, so who’s to blame? ‘Give them what they want, and they’ll pay to hear what they heard yesterday, whether it’s the blues or being saved. Nothing new is great, it’s just okay. And I’m free and happy doin’ my own thing. You can’t blame your ghosts for what you’re not. Poorly aimed goals get over-shot. Everybody knows what is best, but they live with so much regret. Stick with what you know and what you feel. There’s no time to reinvent the wheel. Everything’s been done in some way. Someday I’ll rewrite that dumb cliché. Everyone must move at their own pace, which in turn just proves lifes’ not a race, ‘cause I’m free and happy doin’ my own thing. And I’m free and happy doin’ my own thing. And I’m free and happy doin’ my own thing. And I’m free and happy doin’ my own thing. And I’m free and happy… © 2010 Words and Music written by Ian Patrick Gentles
