Description

As a U.S. Navy Vietnam era veteran, I wrote this song about a generic family or friend describing how much they respect and miss a soldier close to them, and that they pray for his/her safe return from war. This song enabled me to express my feelings about war and it's consequences. Also included is a "shortened" version on the advice of fellow musicians who said the original was a bit too long. I have not yet recorded that shortened version, but I have included both sets of lyrics for you...

Lyrics

Until you Come Back Home (Rick Valente © August 2010....(Single Drop D Tuning – Capo 2 if tuned down ½ step or Capo 1 if std. tuned) D.........G................D............G D I remember when you left us G Going far away alone A Headed off to serve your country G D In a cruel world you were thrown It’s true that you enlisted Seeking glory undefined But the things that war would put you through Were never on your mind G You were not exposed to hatred D Or to people who deceive G You had innocence within your heart Em A Wore your feelings on your sleeve But you felt the need to change the world And you’d give it all you could Every day you live within harm’s way Trying to serve the common good Intro……. Now … we’ve read all of your letters All this time you’ve been away We hope you know – we miss you so And we say a prayer each day That this conflict that has swept you up Will reach a rapid end Soon finished fighting battles You’ll return to us again G And we pray that you take special care D No matter where you roam G Just watch you back, and always know Em A You’ll never be alone D Our hearts will be there by your side G Each moment you are gone A We’ll wait here for you patiently G D Until you come back home (Bridge) G D And as time goes by, we hope you’re doing well G Em A Your letters tell us all is fine as far as we can tell Day by day we hoped for word Always waiting near the phone A message you’d be safe and sound And on your way back home Then news came from a trusted source Said your unit fought so brave But Anbar Province took its toll Many lives your comrades gave G When the soldier standing at our door D Said you lost your life that day G We could not comprehend it all Em A There were no words to say We know you gave it all you could To your nation and to God And your memory will keep us strong As you lie beneath the sod And we’ll never give up hoping And you’ll never be alone We’ll wait here for you patiently Until you come back home (Chrous) ******************Here's my "shortened" version******************** (This was shortened to take out teh part where teh soldier "dies" because my friends suggested it should not end in that way......a perspective......so I adjusted to song to leave that out....... Until you Come Back Home (Rick Valente © August 2010) )Single Drop D Tuning – Capo 2 if tuned down ½ step or Capo 1 if std. tuned) D I remember when you left us G Going far away alone A Headed off to serve your country G D In a cruel world you were thrown It’s true that you enlisted Seeking glory undefined But the things that war would put you through Were never on your mind G You were not exposed to hatred D Or to people who deceive G You had innocence within your heart Em A Wore your feelings on your sleeve But off you went to do your part And give it all you could Every day you live within harm’s way Trying to serve the common good Intro…….
