Lyrics

They were a thousand feet down in that West Virginia coal mine They'd gone down the shaft just before the break of day How could they have known they'd n'er again see the sunshine nor hold their sweet wives or watch their children play. Now the company knew well they needed better ventilation That coal dust and methane can kill a man they say But they cared more about the money than they did their own salvation and they knew those boys had families they'd go down there anyway. Chorus A thousand feet down you can't see the springtime nor the look on the children's faces that tells you summer's comin' round. Just one tiny spark no bigger than a firefly and all their dreams were ended a thousand feet down. Surely these good men's lives are worth more than what's on the ledger at least in the eyes of God they're priceless there's no doubt We must find a way to make their living safer or quit diggin' them holes a thousand feet down. Repeat chorus
