Description

This song is a musical journey to the roots of the Delta Blues. It pays homage to the early greats in this musical genre, such as Blind Lemon Jefferson, Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson. It is based on a dream I had where blues legend Robert Johsnon appeared to me and told me his life story. Each character in the song is personified by unique tones and phrasing on the guitar.

Lyrics

Well I was just a baby, The first time I heard Blind Lemon on the slide… Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, I had them all on Seventy-eights and forty-fives… And I’d sit and listen to them, And think Man! they sho’ know how to slide… (Turnaround) He He…When I started towards that crossroad, You know the one…My Momma, well my Momma pulled me to the side And she said “Don’t you play that devil’s music, boy! You know the bible says the road to hell is wide…” Ahhh, but you know me…I’d sneak my guitar out to the graveyards, Tryin’ to teach myself to slide… Well, I was too young to play in the juice joints, So I’d just hang around, and I’d play outside… One day, an old black gentleman walked up to me, He tipped his hat and he smiled wide… And he said, “You know that hellhound’s in your music, boy, And I sho’ like the way you slide…” Well we laid ‘em out one night in Clarksdale, I had the whole crowd standin’ all up outside… And when we got done in Clarksville, A way-big man, well he followed me outside… Well, he stuck out his hand and he, he said, “I’m the devil, “and let me tell ya boy, you sho’ know how to slide…” Well, I’ve been down to that crossroads, Down at highway sixty one and forty nine… Ya, one night I, walked down to that crossroads, You might say I was, I was lookin’ for a friend of mine… And if ya listen, you can hear him when the wind blows, “Do me proud boy, when you slide!” © 2011 Robert Herndon - All Rights Reserved
